
The Municipality of Tagana-an is one of the 11 towns located in the mainland of the Province of Surigao del Norte. Politically, Tagana-an is also part of the 2nd Congressional District of Surigao del Norte.
The Municipality of Tagana-an was created as a Municipality in June 22, 1947 thru Republic Act 147, 55 years ago in counting, separating the town from the Municipality of Placer, covering the Barrios of Tagana-an, Talavera, Banban, and Opong, and the Sitios of Libas, Gimamaug, Cawilan, and Dijo.
Before this period however, it is said that Tagana-an was created as a Pueblo by a Spanish Royal Decree. Tagana-an was therefore already a town administered by the clergy in 1876 administered by the clergy. The town fiesta is celebrated every July 16th, in honor of "Our Lady of Mt. Carmel."
Sometime in 1899, towards the end of the Spanish era, an epidemic of cholera broke up in the town and neighboring towns, decimating population in the affected towns. forcing the local populace to abandon the town. In 1901, the Americans ordered the return of the people
The primary source of income is on agriculture, primarily coconuts and marine products.
Tagana-an has a total of 7,776 hectares of land. The Municipal waters of Tagana-an is delineated at about 2, 240 hectares. We also have a mangrove area of about 1,800 ha.
Tagana-an is bounded on the North by the Municipality of Sison, South by the seawaters of Bucas Grande,West by Surigao City, and East by Placer, surrounded by the Hinatuan Passage. Accounts narrate that Ferdinand Magellan sailed upon these waters during his sojourn in 1521.
