The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – Caraga (BFAR XIII) headed by Dr. Nilo Selim Katada, Regional Director in coordination with the Local Government of Tagana-an through the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) headed by Ms. Myra Messaiah C. Estobo conducted training on lobster and bangus culture in cage to our local growers in the municipality at Katunggan Resto Park, Brgy. Sampaguita, Tagana-an, Surigao del Norte last March 22-25, 2022.
The said activity was successfully administered and participated by the local individual lobster growers of Himama-ug, Sampaguita and Opong while the bangus growers were from the six (6) different associations in the Municipality including the Cawilan Fisherfolk Association, Banban Fisherfolk Association, Patiño Fisherfolk Association, Fabio Fisherfolk Association, Tagana-an Aqua-Marine Products Producer Association of Sitio California, Brgy. Opong, Tagana-an, Surigao del Norte and the Gagmay na Mamingwitay Nan Tagana-an Fisherfolk Association of Brgy. Azucena, Tagana-an, Surigao del Norte.
The training aims to provide additional knowledge and develop the skills and capabilities of our fisher-folk members who will be managing Lobster and Bangus Culture in Cage. Personnel from BFAR spearheaded the lectures focusing on the following topics: Lobster & Milkfish Biology, Site Selection, Cage Designs & Construction, Cage Operation & Management, Stocks Selection & Stocking, Feeds & Feedings, Stock Sampling & Monitoring, Cage Maintenance & Disease Prevention and Harvesting & Marketing.
This will encourage our marginal fisher-folk to produce more stocks and will open opportunities by honing their skills that will be used as their source of living for their daily sustenance. Moreover, they will become self-reliant and could generate their own income with their learning.
